Agra is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River and it was the capital of India at the time of the Mughals in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Moghul passion for building endowed Agra with some of the loveliest buildings in the world.
Perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world Agra Fort was built by Akbar in 1565 and this rusty red sandstone fort stands like a crescent on the bank of Yamuna River. Initially it was a military structure, with 2.5 km long & 20m high double walls protecting its inhabitants. By Shah Jahan's reign it had partially become a palace. It is one of the finest forts in India and is a silent witness to the rise and fall of the imperial Mughal Empire. Visit its numerous palaces, pavilions and buildings that echo the story of Mughal Empire. Enlarged by the next three generations, the fort contains the Moti Masjid, Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, and JehangirMahal etc. - all of which are Perhaps the most the fine examples of the Mughal architecture.
The TajMahal was built between 1630-1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial in white marble to his queen MumtazMahal. This elegant monument took 22 years to build and employed 20,000 labourers. It is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles TajMahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the greatest love stories ever written with white marble and precious stones. Fatehpur Sikri the magnificent ancient city near Agra was built by Akbar, the great Mughal Emperor. The speciality of Fatehpur Sikri is that it is the best preserved heritage site form the Mughal Era. Akbar was inspired by his ancestor Timur’s Persian Courts and this was reflected in the Persian design principles of FatehpurSikri. The Red Sandstone structures also reflect elements from Hindu and Jain styles of Architecture. Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, PanchMahal, BulandDarwaza and Jama Masjid are the highlights of FatehpurSikri. FatehpurSikri remained the capital of Mughals for only 10 years after which Akbar moved to Lahore.
